Michael Holden FRICS IRRV (Hons)
Michael has 27 years post qualification experience as a Chartered Surveyor. He also engages in facilities and estate management and is working on commissions which include representation to the lands tribunal. He is an APC assessor, mentor and chair and is involved with CPD education, conservation, project and FM. He is a RICS registered valuer and a member of the RICS voluntary advice scheme with the CAB.
Michaels post graduate research interests include innovation and the improvement of customer expectations within the supply chain for survey and valuation instructions and the continuous improvement in best practice for RICS condition reports e.g homebuyer and building survey reports.
He has worked on client side project and facilities management on some very interesting and unique sites/ development projects and has specialised in rating appeals (eg Manchester City Council appeal 1990 full list winning a very sizable reduction in RV), residential and commercial development (eg Towns Moor Blackburn /LGR and other development work). The 200+ projects he has been involved with also range widely in nature, for example City Campus at Salford (100,000 sq ft campus building), the Assynt Visitors Centre, Lochinver, sea defence engineering schemes at Brora, Eric the Viking!, the Wick Project, Accrington Market, Blackburn Railway Station and other community and infrastructure projects. He has also taught real estate in higher education at HE level in the UK for nearly 15 years and have specialised in promoting enterprise and employability and Erasmus + Charter at Higher Education level.
He is a module tutor for the UCEM in Reading and is a visiting lecturer to the the Hague University of Applied Sciences and is proud to represent his professional body (RICS). Michaels interests include sailing and horse riding.
Barry Butler MRICS
Senior consultant surveyor
Barry is a chartered surveyor and RICS registered valuer who we are proud to have working on a commissioned to develop and sustain our Cumbria presence. Barry was elected a chartered surveyor in 1977 and is a highly respected and experienced surveyor with over 40 years PQE in general practice, he oversees compliance within our practice and is based at our Kendal office. Barry undertakes general practice work for both residential and commercial surveying activities.
Since 1987 Barry worked in Cumbria and North Lancashire carrying out surveys and valuations for sale, purchase, rent, rating and taxation purposes on both residential and commercial properties. This has included the inspection, valuation and preparation of reports for the Homebuyer and mortgage purposes as well as surveys of commercial properties.
Barry’s main areas of practice includes:-
Valuations of land and buildings, and interests therein for all purposes.
Taxation valuation of land and buildings. See capital gains tax, income tax, rating
and inheritance tax.
Rating/Council Tax valuation for rating of most types of property; advising on assessments, preparing returns and conducting objections and appeals against, or proposal of amendment to, rating lists; Council Tax valuations.
Rental valuations – valuations; advice on new leases, rent reviews and lease renewals; survey prior to taking the lease and survey of condition.
Mortgage valuation of land and buildings for banks and building societies.
Boundary disputes negotiation and settlement of disputes; preparation of evidence for hearings.
Homebuyer Reports detailed survey of the property together with valuation advice.
Barry is a keen member of the small business community in Cumbria and chairs our CPD events days. Barry is a keen hill walker.
John Trenor MRICS

John Trenor is a GP Chartered Surveyor , specialising in Compulsory Purchase valuations and negotiation, John has wide professional experience in public and private sectors, across a large range of technical surveying skills and a diverse range of locations. John works within his geographical roots in Lancashire , Cumberland and Westmoreland but has recently opened up our London Office specialising on CPO and HS2 work where he has considerable expertise. John has interests in fine food and wine and driving horses.

Mark Ruth Assoc RICS
Mark specialises in residential surveys and has worked within our practice since 2015 gaining his Assoc RICS qualifications with us. Prior to this he had worked in a number of survey practices including with our friend and former colleague Terry Duerden MRICS. He has had many complements from clients in the detailed feedback he gives for pre purchase surveys.
Mark has a Masters degree in conservation and his recent clients have included Fleetwood Museum Trust where he authored a detailed building survey in January 2017, the practice was awarded a lifelong pass to the museum thanks to Marks efforts!
Mark took his first degree in building surveying when Michael Holden was the degree programme leader (this is many years ago). We are proud to have Mark working within our practice. Mark is a committed church goer and church elder.
